Cactus Rock is a company
founded by Jaime Horwitz MBA, a Mexican entrepreneur who immigrated to
Canada in 1989. The company's focus has been to promote Canada to
Spanish speakers around the world mainly over the Internet. In
2004, realizing that millions of Canadians like Mexico, but never heard
of Campeche, Jaime decided to make a proposal to his Mother's home state
to promote it to Canadians as a tourist and retirement destination.
The idea for Campeche.ca
was born on a visit to Campeche City. In 2000, I decided to
visit old relatives and friends with my little daughter during Carnival,
something I hadn't done in over twenty years. My
Mother, who now lives in the Vancouver area, was also visiting at the
time, which made the trip even better, considering my daughter was only
7 years old and my wife was not going with us.
I was very impressed
with the
city and its World Heritage Site designation. So much so, that I have
been back ten times since. I believe that thousands of Canadians
(and Americans and Europeans) would
love this place, if they only knew about it. However, my busy
schedule precluded me from launching this initiative until the Fall of
2004...and here we are. It's 2006 and the traffic to the site continues
to grow nicely.
I am convinced that many
many Canadians will visit Campeche in the coming years as they learn
about the city and the state. They will not only spend many vacations
there, but also many will eventually purchase a winter home in the area
or even invest in a business there. Why?
because it is an ideal place to rest, learn and have fun without being
in one of many crowded, overpriced and rowdy Mexican resorts. Not
that there's anything wrong with that. But as we Canadians age, we will
prefer tranquil, romantic and beautiful places to large touristy
developments. As of early 2005, the cost of properties and construction
is way under the average for other Mexican towns frequented by
foreigners. During my visit in December 2004,
I myself began to look for land where I will eventually build a few
winter homes for my family and some friends. More beautiful
hotels and resorts are being
developed and a major European financed resort (beach, marina and golf
resort) is already underway. Pre-construction sales have begun..
I would guess that the time to invest in a winter home (or at least a
lot) in Campeche is now and perhaps the next two/three years.
After that, prices may be much higher due to the influx of European
buyers, particularly Germans and Italians. On my last few trips to
Campeche, I
established good business relationships with various business people in
order to assist North Americans in their search for
real estate opportunities. I
am also assisting some Campechean entrepreneurs to develop a
resort/residential project in the area of
Sabancuy a fishing village between
Campeche City and Carmen City.
Take your time to browse
around the website or visit every now and then to learn more about this
Hidden Treasure of Mexico, where the land and the people are warm and
friendly and will welcome you with open arms. And if you're
single, who knows? You may find the one. We know of some Canadians who
fell in love with more than the place while studying Spanish at the
Centro de Español y Maya.
If you have any questions
or special requests about Campeche, I will personally do my best to
address them or put you in touch with the right people. You can email me

suerte,
