There are 525 kilometres of coast
in the state of Campeche on the Gulf of Mexico. The City of Campeche is
right on the coast in the northern part of the state and the City of Carmen
is on an island in the southern part of the state.
There are beautiful beaches in Campeche and most of them have little or no
development on them. Many beach areas are protected for the preservation of
carey turtles.
Near the City of Campeche you will find Playa Bonita public beach.
Located only 8 kilometres from downtown Campeche, the beach is easily
reachable by taxi or local bus. There are palapas where you can hang
the hammock that you previously bought in town as well as concession stands
where you can buy beverages. This is the beach where many of the
locals swim on weekends in the spring and summer. During the winter, believe
it or not, many Campechans find the weather a bit chilly, even when the
temperature can reach 30 degrees some days. Early morning in December,
January or February, the temperature in Campeche may be around 20 to 23
degrees centigrade. Campechanos obviously have not heard about the
waters of the Northumberland Strait in Nova Scotia or the many Polar Bear
clubs around the Canada. No Polar Bears here, the water is quite balmy for
Canadians or other Northerners.
Other beaches that you can visit are Seybaplaya, 29 kilometres
southeast of Campeche, Sihoplaya, 39 kilometres from Campeche and ten
from Seybaplaya. There is a beautiful hotel in Sihoplaya for those looking
for a longer stay there.
For the more adventurous or those who are visiting the City of Carmen area,
there is the Playa de Sabancuy on the banks of the river Sabancuy.
This is an enchanting place almost untouched by humans. The waters are very
calm and sand is powder like. There are shrimp, oysters and a wide
variety of fish in the river. The town of Sabancuy is an old fishing
village with a lot of potential for tourism. There are plans to
develop an eco-resort in Sabancuy in the next few years.
Between Champoton in the north and Sabancuy in the South, there are many
beautiful beaches. There are some projects under development on some
of these beaches, such as the
Campeche Playa Golf Marina &
Spa resort. (read about real
estate in Campeche).
In the area of Laguna de Terminos near Ciudad del Carmen in the southern
part of Campeche state one can often find dolphins of the "tursipos
truncatus" species as well as pelicans, manatees, crocodiles,
carey turtles and hundreds of bird species.
For those who are looking for extended winter stays in Campeche there
are
private homes for rent from December to April (right before Easter) in the
Mar Azul and Sombrerón beaches.
