On the north side of the Campeche City's
main square, you will find the city'ss Cathedral. The Catedral de Campeche
was christened on July 14th, 1705. At that time, it was just a
square building with a belfry and brick floors and it was not considered a
Catedral until decades later (see below). In 1758, the parish church and
the tower named “La Española” (The Spaniard) were added. This tower is the
one facing towards the sea.
In 1850 the Cathedral's second tower was
built and named “La Campechana” (The Campechean).
In 1895 the church was granted the Cathedral
designation by the Pope (Bula Papal Prodecessorum Nostrorum.)
The Cathedral is an extraordinary building
designed in neoclassic and baroque styles. A must see is the Holly Grave of
Jesus Christ sculpture inside the Chapel in teh Cathedral's interior, along
with other sculptures.
At night, the Cathedral
façade is lit with beautiful lights.
