There are
several churches in and around Campeche City. Many of these
churches date back to the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries and some date
back to the 19th century. The oldest however is probably the
Church of San Francisco built between 1546 and 1598. It is said
that it was in this Church of San Francisco where the Spanish
conquistadors held the first Catholic mass in terra firme in the New
Spain.
Since 1999 when Campeche City was designated a World
Heritage City, different levels of government have contributed to the
restoration and maintenance of Campeche City's various churches.
These are treasures of colonial Spanish architecture indeed.
Most of the churches in Campeche City are functioning
temples in different parishes around the city. One of the most
famous is the Church of San Román where believers worship the Black
Christ, represented by a magnificent crucifix
hand
crafted Civita Vecchia, Italy in the 16th Century.
And then
there's Campeche City's Cathedral, a beautiful building overseeing
locals and tourists alike who visit Campeche City's main square.
When it's lit at night the Cathedral can be seen from miles away and
from the ocean, it is truly one of the most elegant cathedrals in all of
Mexico.
