The Mayas have lived in this area
of Mexico for thousands of years. Interestingly enough, the Inuit of
the North and the Mayas of the South have been around for roughly the same
time.
There are still pure Maya living
in Campeche and many of today's modern Campechans have some Mayan blood in
them. It is common in Campeche's society to use Mayan expressions during
conversation.
Campeche state has the largest
concentration of Mayan archaeological sites in Mexico. The great
pyramid in Calakmul is the tallest in Mexico. You might have heard of
Chichen Itza and Teotihuacan, two of Mexico's best known ancient sites.
This is because those cities were discovered a long time ago. Campeche's
Mayan cities are relatively new as far as accessibility for visitors.
Calakmul is the most recent and most impressive. The view from the top
of the tallest pyramid there (45 meters high) is something else. From
there you can see three other pyramids jutting out from the jungle.
In addition to Calakmul, you can
visit the Mayan archaeological sites of Edzná., Balamkú, Chicanná, Becán,
Santa Rosa Xtampak, Hormiguero, Xpuhil, Dzibilnocac, Hochob, Tabasqueño and
El Tigre.
Of course you don't have to visit
all the Mayan sites, unless you are a student of all things Maya. We
feel that there are two must sees: Edzná and Calakmul.
Edzná is close to Campeche City, about a 45 minute drive.
Calakmul, however requires more
planning since it takes about three to four hours to get there. It's best
enjoyed if you plan it as a one night stay in the area.
All the
travel operators on this site
can make arrangements for you to visit any and all Mayan cities in Campeche
in escorted tours or in your own vehicle with a chauffeur.
Alternatively, they can make arrangements for you to rent a vehicle, if you
wish to drive yourself.
